Government funding is to be provided to a project led by the Herefordshire Rural Hub which will work towards improving the condition of the River Wye.
Wyescapes, on which the Hub is partnering with the Herefordshire Wildlife Trust, the Wye and Usk Foundation, and Wye Valley National Landscape, will focus on delivering a Landscape Recovery programme for the Wye Catchment area.
This restoration project will see the River Wye’s condition improved so that its beauty can be enjoyed again.
As the River Wye supports farming this project will also go hand-in-hand with sustainable farming developments in Herefordshire.
The project will commence next year and cover 7,694 hectares.
There will first be a development stage in which surveys will be conducted, finance will be secured and land managers will establish key deliverables.
Following this the deliverables will then be implemented over a 20-year period.
Sir Bill said:
“I am delighted that the Wye Catchment area is now getting the attention that it is due.
The River Wye is vital to both wildlife and the farming community and it is important that it is well maintained.
As a farmer who values sustainable practices I am therefore very supportive of the Wyescapes project and hope that it is a great success.”
